Alcohol detox is a program designed to help patients struggling with alcohol dependence stop using the drug, manage their withdrawal symptoms, and take their first steps toward recovery.
When a patient drinks alcohol regularly, they can become physically and psychologically dependent on the substance. When the patient stops drinking alcohol, they may begin experiencing withdrawal symptoms, including:
In some cases, alcohol withdrawal may even be fatal.
The purpose of alcohol detox is to help patients discontinue their use of alcohol as safely and comfortably as possible. Because the patient is under the supervision of professionals during detoxification, they’re less likely to relapse or suffer any serious complications during withdrawal.
New Hope's intake coordinator and our Docters will assess for withdrawal symptoms. If withdrawal systems require medical detoxication, New Hope staff will refer the patient to the appropriate facility. Many clients have mild withdrawal symptoms, and do not require medical detoxification. Once symptoms are abated, the client will return to New Hope for psychosocial treatment.
After the patient has completed the detoxification process, they will still need treatment to overcome their addiction to alcohol. Some of the treatment services available to patients dealing with alcohol dependency include:
